North America has two lengthy ocean coasts and many miles of Great Lakes and Gulf coastline, making it possible to find cruising and chartering during any season. The Pacific Northwest includes both Canadian and US territories and wins the charter popularity contest thanks to its light winds, deep water, and spectacular mountain scenery. A wide variety of power and sail charter options are available, centered between the San Juan Islands and Desolation Sound.
The Northeast offers charter options from Maine windjammer cruises and other large well-outfitted yachts, to privately owned boats available for bareboat charter. You can also find bareboats and crewed charters throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, with Annapolis as the central location.
Though charter companies are scattered all along the Southeast coast, Florida is a dominant charter area because of its year-round climate, well-developed industry, and access to the Florida Keys and the Bahamas. Winter getaways are easily found on both coasts. Crewed yacht charters dominate the Atlantic coast, though some bareboats are available. The Gulf coast is less developed and shallower, so boats tend to be smaller.
Farther north along the Gulf coast, charters are available in ports such as Pensacola Florida, Biloxi Mississippi, and Galveston Bay, Texas.
The Great Lakes offer summer cruising options from urban to rustic. Charter companies based in Chicago and Toronto offer mostly crewed charters on a variety of boats. Seasonal offerings are scattered along the coastlines of several states, and the North Channel of Lake Huron is a prime destination. The season is short, but the people are friendly and much of the coastline is unspoiled.
