The country is strategically located, home of the Panama Canal—one of the most important shipping routes in the world. Panama City is located at the Pacific entrance of the Canal. The city is the political and administrative center of the country, as well as a hub for international banking and commerce. It has hundreds of skyscrapers, international restaurants, museums and a busy nightlife.
This is one of the only places in the world where humpback whales come from both the Northern and Southern hemispheres; you can see them in the months of June to October, especially in The Pearl Islands.
The Pearl Islands is a group of 100 islands just 30 miles away from Panama City. The most notable islands are Saboga and Contadora, resort islands with many homes owned by wealthy Panamanians, where you can find different restaurants and shops. At the end of 2013, The Trump Ocean Club Hotel is opening their beach club in Viveros Island, an exclusive place with lots to do.
Other beautiful uninhabited islands include: Isla del Rey, Chapera, Mogo Mogo, Pacheca. In all of these Islands snorkeling is an amazing experience; the marine life is exotic, with many colorful fishes and corals. Kayaking is another recommended activity in this area. Three of the Pearl Islands were featured in the reality TV program Survivor.
Taboga Island, also known as the "Island of Flowers", is a volcanic island in the Gulf of Panama. It is a tourist destination, about 7 miles from Panama City. Tourism is the major economic activity on the island and it has become a popular scenic attraction, due to its beautiful natural areas and to its proximity to Panama City.
